Note that you should write your report based on the data collected during one
of the lessons.
You must turn in a laboratory report formatted in seventh edition APA style.
The format is double-spaced with either 11-point Arial or 12-point Times

research, methods used, results obtained, conclusions and interpretations.
Introduction
– Briefly introduce the topic and explain the purpose of your research and
why your study is important.
– Provide a literature review of the background and key theories.
– State your hypothesis and your rationale for predicting a particular
outcome.
Method
– Participants: Describe the participants from whom you collect the data.
– Materials: State the materials used to collect the data.
– Procedure: Describe what was done step-by-step.
Results
– Compute statistics appropriately.
– Include tables or figures when necessary.
– Analyse trends/patterns.
Discussion
– Explain whether the results support the hypothesis.
– Compare your findings with previous studies.
– Describe the limitations of your study and suggestions for further research.

Laboratory Report Instructions (to be done in class with the lecturer)
There are two components in our memory – short-term memory and long-term memory.
Short-term memory stores information temporarily for a short amount of time, whereas long-
term memory lasts much longer.
Atkinson and Shiffrin’s (1968) theory of memory suggests that rehearsal moves short-term
memories into long-term stores. Participants can recall words that were repeated more often
than words that were not rehearsed as often.
The current study looks at the effect of rehearsal in memory, and we are replicating past
experiments in this field.
Instructions:
Have a pen and paper ready before the start of the experiment.
Your lecturer will flash a list of words in sequence. Each word will be viewed for 1 second.
You are to read out each word once as it appears. Some words will be repeated, while others
will occur only once.
After the list, you will be given 2 minutes to recall as many words as you can. After that, the
procedure repeats with another word list.
After both rounds are presented, you will need to identify the number of words that you got
correct and submit the results to your lecturer. Your lecturer will collate the results for the
whole class and provide you with the data in an excel file.
In your report, you will need to provide the means and standard deviations of the probability
of recall for each of the groups of words.
